Pilgrim Wines is a small, family owned wine company with a passion for winemaking. 2020 marks the year of the release of their maiden vintages of their two wines – a Chenin Blanc and a Bastardo do Castello. They focus on innovation and experimentation with both familiar and unorthodox cultivars and aim to inspire and surprise with their wines.

‘Grapes from Voor Paardeberg. One-third fermented on the skins for six days. White and yellow fruit, a little earthiness and some yeasty complexity on the nose while the palate has concentrated fruit, bright acidity and a savoury finish. Substantial and satisfying.’ 93 points Christian Eedes.

‘Golden light yellow with a slight green tinge colour. Due to our unconventional methodology, this wine is characterized by bursts of flavour, typically predominated by stone fruit like apricot, peach and pear on the nose. Some barrel influenced evolved aromas will also be prevalent, like cream, vanilla, some toffee and caramel. Due to the total skin fermented portion, the wine shows off a different dimension of orange marmalade and lemon blossom. It has a volume on the mouthfeel that transcends the norm, almost ethereal in a sense as it feels weighty and full but in tasting it, it ends off with a beautiful mineral salinity, so light to the touch with a vibrancy, it leaves you wanting some more. It has a really great potential for aging as well…’ Henry Kotze, winemaker.
